PROF. JASPER KATHENYA IMUNGI

Prof. Jasper Kathenya Imungi, world-renowned scholar and food scientist, passed away unexpectedly on 4th August, 2021.

He is survived by the mother of his children, Susan Wanja Imungi. A loving father of Dr. Muthoni Imungi, Mwirigi Imungi, Gakii Imungi and Makena Imungi. Father-in-law to Leah Mwenda and Geoffrey Waweru. Doting grandfather of Naserian Waweru, Kanana Waweru, Rose Mukami and Munene Imungi Mwenda. He is brother of Ruth Kagige, Jusyline Mukwanjeru, James Mbuthia and Joy Kagendo. He is son of the late Hosea M’Mugambi and Pitnis Gaaji, and sibling to the late Leonard Mugambi, Fredrick Marangu, Mbura Mugambi, Mercy Mukwanjeru and Trim Alexander.

He studied at the University of Nairobi, the Swiss Institute of Technology (Switzerland) and later completed his PhD at Cornell University (USA). He was a professor at University of Nairobi (1978-2020) where he held various positions through the years. He served on several boards and contributed immensely towards the food safety and nutrition landscape both in Kenya and internationally through his research and publications. He was well-loved and respected by his peers and students.

He was an avid reader and regular contributing writer to the Kenyan dailies. He was known for his open personality, intelligence, quick wit and love of life. He took pride in his role as a husband, father and grandfather and will be fondly remembered and deeply missed.

Family and friends will be meeting daily at their Kahawa Sukari residence from the 9th to 12th of August, 2021, from 4:30pm. COVID19 protocols will be observed.
