SAMWEL OGUTU LUGANO (GHAI OGUTU, ABURA NYANG’- EAST AFRICA)

1958 ~ 29th October, 2023

We regret to announce the death of Mr. Samwel Ogutu Lugano (Ghai Ogutu,Abura Nyang’-East Africa) of Kiswa family, Wiramba Clan of the Abasuba Community, Mfangano Island.

The death occurred on Sunday, 29 October 2023, in Nairobi, after a long illness.

Mr. Lugano is credited for his personal efforts in establishing institutions, including Suba Teachers Savings
and Credit Cooperative Society (SUTECO), now Fortitude Sacco, Mfangano West Fishermen Cooperative Society (MWEFCO), the defunct Mfangano West Village Bank, Wasamo Girls Secondary School, and several businesses in Mfangano island.

Beloved son to the late Francis Ogutu Utende (Potea Pata) and Jennifer Akong’o (Nyongata, Ajenny Makosa).

Loving husband to Maren Akoth Akuku.

Grandson to Utende Asomo and Stella Aongo Ochien’g (Ngunya) of Wiramba Clan, and Thomas Ongata and Teresia Okanda (Nyadimbo) of Kaswanga Clan. Son-in-law to the late mzee Acentus Akuku Ogwella (Danger) and Syprosa Omune (Nyarodi), of Kanyamwa Clan, Migori County.

Loving father to Gordwin Lugano (Kenbro Industries), Dr. Geoffrey Lugano, PhD (Warwick, UK), Peter Lugano (International Medical Corps, Sudan), Tonny Lugano (Kenyatta University Law School), the late Elvis Lugano, and the late Gregory Lugano.

Grandfather to Tattyanne Lugano (Little Havard Academy), Samwel Lugano Jnr,and Ella-Jenny Lugano (All Saints’ Cathedral School).

Father-in-law to Flora Nzioka and Penina Odero.

Brother to the late Maurice Ochieng’ (Kaki), the late Pamela Anyango, the late George Ogutu, Doreen Adhiambo and Pamela Wachara, Step-brother to Odira Makemo, Akinyi, and Collins Otieno.

Brother-in-law to Mary Ochieng’, the late Otieno Akuku, the late Kenneth Akuku, the fate Jairus Akuku, Getrude Okuku, Philgona Kiriga, Paul Oduor, and Philemon Wachara.

Nephew to the late Nyembo Utende, Achieng’ Utende, Esther Akello, Sawanya, Okello Ongata, James Kigoe, Hellen Bunde, Plister Wachara, Fleria Ochieng’, Margaret Ouma and Risper Maende.

The late Samwel will be laid to rest at his home in Miugala Village, Mfangano West Division, Mfangano Island, on 24th November 2023.
